I purchased a NexStar 3 USB 2.0 External from ebay about a year ago (it was brand new according to the previous owner). It has 3.5 enclosure with usb 2.0 interface. When I plugged it to the power socket, the blue light shinning as per normal.
However, my computer (windows XP), my laptop(windows XP), my friend's computer(windows Vista) and my friend's laptop (windowss Vista) is not detecting it at all. I have checked under disk management under (which is under computer management) and it is not showing either. I have many backup documents in there. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks a lot! Hi, My laptop detects the external drive but does not want to install the software cause it says that Cypress AT2LPRC42 driver is missing.

That is when i decided to check the internet. I'm not a computer expert so I won't use too much tech language but after months of dissapointment, I finally got my NexStar 3 to work and it was actually easy! At first I thought it was a driver problem so I tried to find a driver on line or in the disc provided (it wasn't neccessary as I run windows XP). Then I actually opened the disc provided and found the PDF manual and opened that for a read (maybe the answer was in there?) Yep!! It has the answer you are looking for.
Part of this manual 5.2 describes that 'a partition is required' if the hard drive does not appear under My Computer. To do this you: Right click on your 'My Computer' icon and choose 'Manage', Under 'Storage' on the LEFT pane, select 'Disc Management', Find the drive (mine was around 300GB so I knew it was the one) at the bottom Left and 'Initialize' the disc by clicking on 'not initialized', Then in the bottom RIGHT Pane, where the status bar is, Right click and choose New Partition, Follow the directions from the Wizard.
(Recommended partition type is 'Primary' and file type 'NTFS'. When this is done you should see your drive under My Computer. NOTE: This formatted around 23GB on the newly created 'E' drive I selected. After this, by Right clicking the other unallocated area of the drive I went on to format the rest of the drive as a 'F' drive which contains the other 256GB.
Hope this helps! Keith in South Australia. Posted on Sep 20, 2008.

Pros: Looks great, and works Cons: Its pre-mature death might have been my fault. A piece of black plastic on the back, where the plugs go in, fell off. I glued it back on. Maybe that fried the logic board, but I didn't notice any static.
Win 8 recognized drive, but Crystal Disk Info Portable did not. In Device Manager, you see 'Initio,' that's just the logic board. But it it was fried, why does anything show up? I tried the drive on another enclosure of the same make an model, and it came up.
Be extra careful if the plastic on the back falls off. Two other OKGear enclosure I have are still working fine, and I've had them longer. Pros: Nothing too much here, it does what it says, attaches to HDD that use 3.5 IDE connectors and you can connect it to a computer via USB drive. Supports USB 2.0. Cons: - It gets pretty hot, fast. Difficult to disconnect IDE/power cable Other Thoughts: I have a bunch of old drives that uses a 3.5 connector.
I didn't have an old motherboard laying around so I bought this to see 1) what's on my old HDDs (1 gig anyone? Lol) 2) rescue any content that I wanted to save. It does what it says, I was able to connect the old HDD up to this Vantec device and got what I wanted. Some con's though. The device gets really hot. There is not much ventilation in the case (none.), and swapping out HDD is a pain. Since the bracket that the HDD actually mounts on gets hotter than the case, it expands, pretty much swapping out HDD not a fast process.
I tried to 'force' it open, but the plastic face is held on by 2 small screws, so I knew I would break it if I put too much force. So, the only way to swap out drives was to let it cool down completely, then put in a new HDD. I had about 5 HDD that I need to go through, so as you can imagine, it wasn't a quick process. After the 3rd one, I just skipped putting it back into the case and just connected the interface directly to the HDD and used the USB to connect to my computer; much faster!!! The IDE connector and power cable were (as in my experience with these cables, in general) really difficult to remove. The space between the inner face plate to the back of the HDD was very tight, so it was a challenge swapping out HDD.
All in all, it did what it was supposed to, if you are looking for a faster, hot swap option, I would look to another device. If have just 1 HDD that you will use, and never swap out, then this will do the job. Pros: Works great out of the box. I'm using Ubuntu Linux, and it showed up as a USB drive just fine. I didn't even need to use the driver disk that they included.
Goes as fast as any other USB 2.0 drive. The case feels very solid, and it has little rubber feet to grip the desktop. Cons: None so far Other Thoughts: As some other reviewers have commented, I also would like a way to disable the power-save feature. All in all a good, solid product at a good price.
